Piston Cloud Announces Support for Dell Hardware

I’m excited to announce that, through a collaboration with Dell, Piston Enterprise OS™ is now certified to run on popular Dell servers and switches. Dell is an important partner for the broader OpenStack™ community. With our joint support of open source development, Dell and Piston Cloud have demonstrated a commitment to ensuring strong interoperability across the OpenStack ecosystem. This relationship also reflects Piston Cloud’s continued commitment to remain vendor-agnostic in our approach to architecture.

Piston Enterprise OS is the first Cloud Operating System built on OpenStack, enabling enterprise users to rapidly achieve the benefits and promise of the cloud behind their firewall. Piston Enterprise OS is a complete private cloud operating system, deployed using converged networking and commodity server hardware. As enterprises are handling more and more data, along with leveraging the huge advancements in CPU and storage density, system architects must address scale-out architecture to ensure that network bandwidth is not a bottleneck. Converged networking is a key piece of Piston Cloud’s Null-Tier Architecture.

Using best-of-breed 10GigE switches like the Dell PowerConnect 8024, with full 10Gb interconnects and a small 1U form-factor, allows customers to achieve maximum throughput in Piston Enterprise OS private cloud deployments.

In addition, Piston Enterprise OS customers can take advantage of the continuing price-to-performance advantage in the latest Dell R710 server systems. Many Fortune 500 companies have come to rely on the reliability and performance of Dell; the leading OpenStack-powered private cloud operating system now supports some of the very best x86 server hardware on the market.

As the industry shifts from IT that is largely manually-operated, slow, and tightly coupled with physical infrastructure to IT that is highly automated, software-driven, and responds rapidly to user self-service requests, today’s private cloud solutions are poised to transform IT economics for the enterprise. Piston Cloud’s OpenStack-powered solutions, running on Dell infrastructure, will play a central role in this transformation.
